Dynamics CRM 2011 Cannot Go Offline - Can't Open MSSQL$CRM Service on Computer

PROBLEM:
  • You are using Dynamics CRM 2011 Outlook Client and receiving error "CRM 2011 can't open MSSQL$CRM service on computer *.*", when trying to go offline.
  • None of the rollups fix the problem

SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
The MSSQL$CRM service or one of it's dependencies can not start - possibly because it has been set to "Disabled". Ensure the MSSQL$CRM service, and any it depends on, is set to "Automatic" and start them. Try going offline again.

OTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
  • If you are running MS CRM 3.0, check user permissions. The user must be an administrator on the local machine. If the user's administrator rights are removed, they will not be able to start the service and go offline. Add the user as an administrator on the local computer, re-start the computer and try going offline again.
  • If this doesn't work, call Microsoft Support, as it could be some hitherto unknown thing that will commit you to an insane asylum if you try to figure it out alone.
